Work From Home and Make $15+ an Hour Training AI With Outlier

Heads up — this post includes affiliate links. These are products and services I actually use and recommend. If you sign up using my link or code, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for the support!

Want to work from home, on your own schedule, in your pajamas if you feel like it? Outlier pays regular people to help train AI from a laptop, and rates of $15 an hour or more are common. You pick your hours. There's no boss, no commute and no minimum shift. I'm on the platform myself, and if you read and write English fluently, you can apply with my invite link right here. The project it's tied to doesn't require a degree.

Here's what it is, what it pays and what to know before you sign up.

What Is Outlier?

Outlier is a remote work platform operated by Scale AI, a San Francisco company that supplies training data to AI developers. AI models learn from human feedback, so Outlier pays people to write, rate, review and correct that work. Its network is more than 700,000 people.

The invite in this post is for remote AI voice, image and video tasks. Outlier's other projects range from general writing and rating to coding, law, medicine and science.

How It Works

  1. Sign up. Create your account through this invite and fill out your profile. Outlier's FAQ says to have a valid ID, a resume, a LinkedIn profile and a mobile phone from your country of residence ready.
  2. Pass the screenings. Onboarding takes about 30 to 90 minutes, according to Outlier, and each project has its own qualification step.
  3. Get matched. Selection is competitive, so being accepted isn't automatic.
  4. Work when you want. You see the rate before you start. There are no minimum hours, and you can turn down project invitations.
  5. Get paid weekly. Payments go out every Tuesday through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.

What Can You Make Per Hour?

Rates change by project, skill and location. Outlier says hourly pay runs from $10 to $50. Some projects pay by the hour and others pay by the task. One 2026 review listed these typical rates:

  • General writing and rating: $12 to $18 an hour
  • Mid-skill projects: $15 to $25 an hour
  • Coding, legal and medical: $22 to $35 an hour
  • Specialists and experts: $30 to $75 an hour, with assessments and less steady work

Do the math at $15 an hour: 10 hours a week is $150 before taxes, or about $600 over four weeks. That's a nice car payment or grocery budget for a few evenings at the kitchen table. Your real number depends on how much work is available and how fast you go, since unpaid reading and reviews can lower your effective rate.

What About Bonuses?

Yes, Outlier runs bonuses, and this is where it gets fun.

  • Missions: These are limited-time rewards for hitting milestones. When I checked my dashboard this week, one offered $20 for completing a 2-hour milestone, with up to $40 total. Missions vary, and they can last only a few days.
  • Referrals: Once you meet the task requirement, you can invite friends too. My dashboard shows up to $100 per standard referral and up to $200 on a current doubled project offer. Both people have to finish the minimum tasks within 60 days, and the lifetime cap is $5,000.

Those amounts change often, so check your own dashboard for what's live.

Is Outlier Legit? The Honest Part

Outlier is a real company that pays real people, and its Trustpilot score was recently reported at 4.1 from more than 5,500 reviews. It's still a side gig, not a salary, so go in with clear expectations:

  • Work isn't guaranteed. Projects start and stop when clients need them, and Outlier itself warns of quiet stretches with no tasks.
  • Onboarding may be unpaid. Reviewers report unpaid screenings, and passing one doesn't guarantee paid work.
  • You're a contractor. That means 1099 income, no benefits, and taxes are on you, so set some aside.
  • Quality counts. Reviewers describe account pauses, deactivations and slow support, so read the instructions closely.
  • There's been legal trouble. Workers sued Scale AI over contractor status and unpaid time. A $12.5 million proposed settlement covers California contributors. A final approval hearing was set for October 30, 2026, and I couldn't confirm a ruling.

Who Should Sign Up?

Outlier is a great fit if you want extra money, have some free hours and can follow detailed instructions. Think parents, students of legal working age, night owls and anyone saving for something. It's not a good fit if you need steady hours to pay the rent.

It costs nothing to apply, so the worst case is you lose an hour on the screening. If you've never applied to Outlier before, use my invite to get started. The link has a limited number of uses and expires January 2, 2027. People with an existing Outlier account, or who have applied before, can't use it.
